Tesla India debut: First Showroom Opens in Mumbai, Model Y Priced at Rs 59.89 Lakh

July 15, 2025, Mumbai — In a major turning point for the electric vehicle (EV) market in India, Tesla Inc. opened its first store in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking the company’s formal debut in the nation. In addition to the opening of the store, Tesla unveiled the Model Y, which retails at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Rear-Wheel Drive version.

Model Y: Premium EV with Global Appeal

The Long Range version of the Model Y has an amazing WLTP-certified range of up to 622 kilometers on a single charge. Tesla maintains its performance reputation by accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.

Additionally, Tesla is charging ₹6 lakh for the optional Full Self-Driving capability. The car is covered under warranty for 4 years and 80,000 kilometers, and the battery and drivetrain are covered for 8 years and 192,000 kilometers.

Flagship Showroom Opens in BKC, Mumbai

An important strategic retail base for Tesla’s introduction into India is the brand-new Tesla Experience Centre, which is housed in Maker Maxity Mall in BKC. Visitors can start the booking process, purchase Tesla goods, view Supercharger details, and have a closer look at the Model Y.

Tesla’s dedication to breaking into the Indian premium EV market is demonstrated by the fact that a second showroom is already planned in Delhi-NCR.

Bookings & Deliveries Timeline

Online reservations for the Model Y are now being accepted by Tesla. The Long Range model is anticipated to launch in October 2025, while the Standard RWD variant will begin deliveries in Q3 2025.

Why the High Price Tag?

The cost of the Model Y has generated debate despite the excitement. This is because Tesla had to pay up to 100% in import taxes as the car was imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). According to industry analysts, taxes and tariffs alone cost each unit more than ₹21 lakh.

Due to its price strategy and lack of a local production site, Tesla’s Model Y is directly competing with other luxury EVs from companies like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Audi in India.

Charging & Support Infrastructure

In India, Tesla has also started to expand its network of Superchargers, with the first ones being set up in Delhi and Mumbai. Vehicle maintenance and post-purchase assistance will be offered by a specialized service center in Kurla, Mumbai.

The introduction of Tesla, which gives customers a taste of one of the most cutting-edge EVs in the world, is a historic moment for the Indian car industry. The action lays the groundwork for more competition, infrastructure development, and EV awareness in India, even though premium pricing may restrict initial uptake.

Tesla’s long-term India plan will be greatly influenced by the Model Y’s performance as the company assesses regulatory and market attitudes.
