June 2025, Mumbai: This July, Tesla Inc. is scheduled to open its first official showroom in India, marking a significant turning point for the electric vehicle (EV) industry in that nation. The showroom will be housed inside the renowned Maker Maxity shopping center in Mumbai’s affluent Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
Location & Lease Details
Tesla has agreed to lease the 4,000 square foot showroom for five years. In the first year, the corporation will pay about ₹35 lakh per month; by the fifth year, that amount will have progressively increased to almost ₹42 lakh. Furthermore, Tesla has paid ₹2.11 crore as a security deposit.
What Models Will Be Available?
At first, Tesla will offer cars that are imported from China. Five Model Y (rear-wheel drive) vehicles have reportedly already reached Mumbai. However, these EVs would cost a hefty ₹60–70 lakh (compared to $44,990 or ₹37 lakh in the U.S.) because of India’s high import tariffs, which can reach 70% or higher.
India EV Market & Tesla’s Strategy
Currently, premium EVs make up less than 2% of India’s total new car sales, while electric vehicles only make up around 5%. Given how price-sensitive Indian consumers are, this poses a problem for Tesla. However, the company’s debut is a major step toward the adoption of luxury EVs.
What’s Next – Expansion in Delhi
Tesla intends to open a second showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity after the Mumbai launch. In order to support its activities in India, the company is actively hiring employees and developing a logistical network.
This action demonstrates Tesla’s sustained interest in the Indian market and comes after a high-profile meeting between Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Looking Ahead
The capacity of Tesla to localize production or assembly would probably determine how well the company does in India. This would assist lower pricing and increase brand accessibility for Indian consumers.
